About the role

As the Public Affairs Support Officer, you’ll be an integral part of the team and play a key role in supporting the Manager Public Affairs and the Public Affairs leadership group. You’ll contribute to the smooth running of day-to-day operations and assist with the coordination, planning and delivery of projects across communications, engagement and advocacy.

The role goes beyond administration. You’ll contribute to content development, coordinate meetings and events, support team planning and reporting, and help ensure our communications are clear, consistent and aligned to Council’s standards. You’ll also support events and Council activities when required, along with stepping in to support Communications and Engagement Advisors during periods of leave.

Your work will help the team deliver on its strategic priorities and maintain our positive, well-connected team culture.

Key responsibilities

  • Providing broad project and administrative support to the Manager Public Affairs.
  • Working closely with the leadership team to support the delivery of communications, engagement, advocacy and reporting activities.
  • Helping with meetings, workshops and events, including bookings and calendar coordination.
  • Writing, editing, proofreading, designing and coordinating Council publications, newsletters and communication materials.
  • Helping ensure communications meet Council’s branding, style and quality standards.
  • Supporting team planning and monitoring, including tracking key deliverables and budget activities.
  • Coordinating purchasing processes including purchase orders, invoices and credit card payments.
  • Supporting procurement processes and supplier coordination.

About you

You’re organised, proactive and enjoy being at the centre of a busy, purpose-driven team. You’re confident managing competing priorities, supporting projects and contributing to operational and administrative tasks that keep everything running smoothly. You have strong communication skills and enjoy writing clear, accessible content. You’re collaborative, personable and comfortable working with staff across the organisation.

You will bring

  • Experience in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or a related field
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage basic projects.
  • Keen interest or experience in communications, copywriting or community engagement.
  • Experience producing or supporting content for websites, social media, newsletters or publications.
  • Basic understanding of budget and procurement processes.
  • Ability to work with multiple stakeholders and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to work to deadlines.
