About the role
The Open Space Planner plays an important role in shaping and improving the City’s network of local parks and public spaces, with a strong focus on delivering practical, well‑designed improvements across a range of projects and scales.

Acting as Council’s key advocate for open space, the role leads planning for the provision of future open space, policy implementation and evidence‑based decision‑making in developing and reviewing  masterplans and progressing key actions through concept design and community engagement. Working closely with internal teams and external partners, the Open Space Planner balances strategic thinking with hands‑on project development to deliver achievable, sustainable and climate‑responsive outcomes that respond to local open space needs.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Undertake site visits across the municipality.
  • When required, attend Council and community meetings outside of standard business hours

Who we are looking for
You are an experienced open space professional who enjoys making a tangible difference through well‑considered strategies, policies and projects to continually build and refine our open and public space network.

You bring a strong background in open space policy and strategic planning, paired with the ability to translate big‑picture objectives into practical, achievable improvements on the ground. You thrive on guiding projects from concept to delivery handover by coordinating consultants, managing budgets and timelines, and ensuring quality outcomes.

The following is also required:

  • Tertiary qualification in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Recreation or a related discipline, with substantial professional experience.
  • Demonstrated high level of competency and substantial experience in developing policy and strategy in an open space planning context.
  • Proven experience leading complex open space planning and design projects, including concept design, consultant management, cost estimation and delivery coordination within budget and time constraints.

Not meeting all the requirements for this role? We value diverse experiences for positive community outcomes. If you're excited about the position but don't perfectly align with the criteria, we still encourage you to apply.
