About the team
The Role sits within the Legal and Governance Team, where you’ll work closely with the Senior Legal and Governance Officer and report to Coordinator Legal and Governance. The team is part of the Legal Risk and Governance Department which plays a critical role in safeguarding Council’s integrity, managing legal risk, and promoting best-practice governance. About the role
As our Governance and Compliance Officer, you will act as Glen Eira’s Freedom of Information (FOI) Officer, managing Freedom of Information requests. You will provide expert advice on governance, compliance, and privacy matters, ensuring Council meets its legislative obligations and maintains best practice standards.

Responsibilities include:

  • Managing Freedom of Information requests and other information inquiries, including document searches, decision letters, and liaison with applicants, third parties, and regulators.
  • Maintaining your knowledge of the Freedom of Information legislation and delivering advice and training to staff.
  • Assisting with governance and statutory compliance, including maintaining delegations and authorisations.
  • Supporting staff education on legislative, governance, and compliance obligations.

About you
You are a detail-oriented professional with a strong understanding of governance and compliance within the local government context. You have excellent research and analytical skills, enabling you to resolve complex and sensitive issues with discretion, and to provide practical, clear advice to internal teams and external stakeholders.

The following is also required:

  • A tertiary qualification in law or governance and/or relevant experience.
  • Ability to interpret legislation, prepare advice, and draft legal instruments.
  • Highly developed research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong knowledge of the Local Government Act, Freedom of Information Act, Privacy and Data Protection Act, and related legislation.

  • New National Police Record Check
  • Evidence of right to work in Australia.
