About the team
The Recycling and Waste Services team sits within the Circular Economy unit and looks after waste, recycling and cleanliness across Glen Eira. This covers kerbside collections, booked hard waste, public bins, dumped rubbish clean-ups, and disposal and recycling services. All services are delivered by contractors. The team also works closely with the community, providing education and programs to help reduce waste and encourage better recycling habits in line with Council strategy and Circular Economy plan.

About the role
As our Litter Prevention Officer, you will operate as an Authorised Officer under the Environmental Protection Act 2017, leading investigations, enforcing regulations, and engaging with the community to create cleaner, safer public spaces.

You will play an important role in both compliance and education, working closely with residents, businesses, contractors, and internal teams to address litter and waste management issues.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Investigating reports of illegal dumping, bin misuse, and contamination in kerbside bins
  • Responding to and resolving community complaints relating to waste, litter, and environmental compliance
  • Enforcing the Community Local Law 2019 and Mobile Garbage Bin Policy standards
  • Working collaboratively with internal teams, contractors, traders, real estate agents, and body corporates to prevent littering

About you
You are motivated by positive community outcomes and are focused on environmental protection and regulatory compliance. You bring a balanced approach to enforcement, firm when required, but always respectful, fair, and solutions-focused

You also have a solid understanding of environmental and local government legislation and are confident in applying it in real world situations. You are equally passionate about educating the community, helping others understand their responsibilities, and promoting sustainable waste practices.

The following is also required:

  • Tertiary qualifications in waste, environmental and/or compliance fields along with relevant experience, or lesser formal qualifications with substantial experience in a compliance related field
  • Experience enforcing the Environment Protection Act (2017), Community Local Law 2019 and Mobile Garbage Bins Policy.
  • Experience enforcing the local government regulatory and statutory requirements, investigation, resolution, and enforcement processes.
  • Relevant customer management experience in a similar role.
  • Experience in service delivery contract supervision.
  • Current and valid driver's license

Not meeting all the requirements for this role? We value diverse experiences for positive community outcomes. If you're excited about the position but don't perfectly align with the criteria, we still encourage you to apply.
