About the role
We are seeking a highly motivated, qualified, and experienced individual to undertake day-to-day maintenance of Council’s biodiversity areas in parks. This role is an integral part of the Parks department, responsible for providing services that meet the needs of customers across the range of local government open space services and increasing biodiversity value in Glen Eira.  

In this role you will:

  • Assist in increasing the biodiversity value in Glen Eira through enhancing habitat
  • Assist in maintaining biodiversity areas of open space to specified standards in the areas of revegetation and regeneration, weed control, vegetation pruning, and other associated park presentation tasks
  • Deliver daily tasks as set out in work schedules within agreed timeframes and standards set by Team Leader Urban Biodiversity
  • Completion of work documentation including the use of mobile equipment
  • Ensure equipment is routinely maintained in accordance with maintenance procedures to maximise safety and clean working conditions
  • Communication throughout the day with the Team Leader Urban Biodiversity
  • Ensure that all works are carried out in accordance with agreed OH&S guidelines and safe working practices at all times
  • Provide assistance and information to members of the public when requested
  • Work with Friend groups where an occasional weekend work maybe required.

Other responsibilities include/ day to day duties include but not limited to:

  • Carry out biodiversity maintenance operations requiring a high level of skill and judgment
  • Utilise all tools and equipment associated with biodiversity maintenance including power tools and chemical application
  • Contribute to plant selection for biodiverse areas with Team Leader Urban Biodiversity
  • Work with the horticultural maintenance teams from time to time
  • Undertake other duties as and when directed by the Team Leader Urban Biodiversity

About you
You are passionate about urban biodiversity and high quality public open space, with the ability to work well in a team. The role requires experience with safe operation and maintenance of a range of maintenance/horticultural plant and equipment. You will also actively participate in reporting matters of health, safety and Council asset damage.

The following are also required:

  • Qualifications in Conservation and Land Management or related field and/or relevant experience
  • Good knowledge of integrated weed management practices using chemical and manual control options
  • Good knowledge of the flora and fauna of Glen Eira
  • Experience with safe operation and maintenance of parks maintenance plant and equipment
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills and the ability to use mobile equipment to capture information
  • Demonstrated commitment and adherence to organisational values and behaviours
  • Current Australian Driver’s License
  • Current truck (MR) license is desirable
  • A level of physical fitness required to perform the physical inherent requirements to the position
