About the team
Join a passionate and high-performing Public Affairs team that’s all about building trust, telling powerful stories, and connecting our community with their Council. We’re strategic, collaborative and always looking for new ways to make an impact — from Glen Eira News to digital campaigns and advocacy that reflect community needs. We experiment, innovate and deliver work that’s clear, purposeful and inclusive.

About the role
This is a leadership role with real influence. As our Senior Communications Advisor, you’ll lead a small team and work in a business partner model across the organisation to deliver integrated, audience-focused communications that support Council priorities and strengthen our reputation.

You’ll provide strategic advice to senior leaders, shape clear and consistent messaging, and identify opportunities to build community trust. Working across media, digital, publications and internal channels, you’ll ensure our communications are impactful, accessible and aligned.

You’ll also play a key role in mentoring and developing your team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture.

 Other responsibilities include:

  • Leading the end-to-end development and delivery of corporate communications strategies and initiatives
  • Providing strategic advice and insights on emerging communications issues, risks and opportunities
  • Establishing and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, including internal clients, Councillors, media and the community
  • Identifying new and creative ways to tell our stories and build engaged audiences across a range of channels
  • Driving positive storytelling across media, digital and publications, including writing for Glen Eira News
  • Supporting the Coordinator Communications to shape and deliver corporate communications strategies and plans
  • Coaching and developing a small, high-performing communications team

About you
You’re a strategic communicator and natural leader who thrives in a fast-paced, stakeholder-driven environment. You bring strong judgement, creativity and a proactive mindset to every challenge, with the ability to translate complex information into clear, compelling messages.

You’re confident working with senior leaders and navigating a political environment, and you know how to balance competing priorities while delivering high-quality outcomes.

Just as importantly, you’re a collaborative team player who enjoys mentoring others and contributing to a positive, high-performing culture.

The following is also required:

  • Demonstrated experience delivering strategic communications across media, digital and internal channels
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with a keen eye for detail
  • Proven leadership experience, including managing and developing staff
  • Relevant qualification in Communications, Journalism or related field (or equivalent experience)

Not meeting all the requirements for this role? We value diverse experiences for positive community outcomes. If you're excited about the position but don't perfectly align with the criteria, we still encourage you to apply.

Pre-employment checks
Progressed candidates must undergo pre-employment screening as a standard procedure which will include:

  • Employee Working with Children Check
  • New National Police Record Check
  • Evidence of right to work in Australia.

Pre-employment checks are not used by Glen Eira City Council to prevent any applicant from applying for this position. Each application will be considered on its merits.
